Allowing ourselves and our children to explore our creativity, we permit ourselves to experiment, discover boundaries and make mistakes. This in turn builds confidence and independence in our writing, hence, improving our creativity.

Helps to Develop Creative Thinking.

Creative writing can support our curiosity, allows us to be inventive, solve problems, and explore our creative ideas therefore permitting us to improve our skills and helps us to develop our creative thinking.

Develops Empathy.

When we are story writing we will quite often put ourselves in the situation of other people through our characters. Over time we can develop this skill of writing scenarios from the perspective of different characters and considering the feelings and reasonings of everyone concerned. Through practising this skill and form of writing, we can develop our empathy, which in turn enables us to build social connections in our own lives.

Develops Language Skills.

One thing that I encourage in my children’s writing classes and workshops is to focus on being creative and exploring our imaginations rather than our spelling, punctuation or grammar. Now I completely understand the importance of these elements of literacy. However, in my experience concentrating on the creative side of writing, develops a child’s confidence in writing and as a result the child becomes a resilient learner and areas such as spelling, punctuation and grammar will develop organically.

For example, children will be more inclined to use bigger, more difficult words when there is no fear of mistakes.

Thus allowing children to develop their skills without feeling the pressure, as well as being able to adapt to different tasks and environments and taking advantage of opportunities to reach their full individual potential.

Strengthens Writing Skills.

As the saying goes “practise makes perfect.” The more we practise the skill of creative writing the better we get. Hence, we strengthen are skill of writing.

Improves Organisational Thought when Story Planning.

Writing a story can involve a fair amount of organisational thought and planning, which is a great skill to develop and can help us in so many other areas of our lives.

Helps with Learning Other Subjects.

Developing our creativity supports us to think outside of the box, and developing this fantastic and very important skill, can help us in a vast amount of areas and subjects such as science, maths, story writing, dance, etc.
