First, we had TikTok, then Instagram gave us REELs, and now YouTube, the original video platform that allowed the public to become creators and go viral, gives us YouTube Shorts!

The summer of 2020 was the year that TikTok became a household name. No matter your age or ability we were all practising our mini dance routines, making funny videos, or sharing with the rest of the world our everyday tips, lives, or favourite party tricks. After all, the world was experiencing a global pandemic and we needed a way to reach out and connect.  

2020 The Year of the Short Form Video.

By the end of the summer 2020, Instagram had launched their own short-form video feature and had named it REELs.

REELs offered its user a similar selection of editing tools, music clips and features as the ever so popular TikTok platform.

Reels allow creators to create 15 or 30 second videos and even have their own dedicated feed.

Instagram also recently revealed that it no longer wants to be known as a photo sharing app, as they are going to concentrate on pushing out video content especially REELs.  

The Competitions On!

So as TikTok and Instagram fight it out to be the number one short form video sharing app, who should come along? Yes! you’ve guessed it, the mother of video content, YouTube!

YouTube knew they had to up their video sharing game and decided they wanted in on the action, and now they bring you YouTube Shorts.

So, what is YouTube Shorts?

YouTube Shorts is a new way to watch, create and discover short, catchy video content on your phone, and has very similar features to the likes of TikTok and Instagram REELs, such as a range of editing tools and audio.

Shorts allows its users to create content up to 60 seconds long and connects them to YouTubes 2 billion users. Creators also have the option to upload content from a mobile, desktop or other devices.

YouTube Shorts have their own dedicated app but can also be viewed from your YouTube homepage.
