Does your child love to write but doesn’t always know what to write about? Does your child always write about the same things but needs to be challenged in other areas?

Thinking of ideas to help your children with their literacy skills can sometimes be quite daunting for parents. In this blog I am going to share with you two fantastic ideas to get your children writing and thinking outside of the box.

Photo/ Prop Writing Challenge

I have mentioned this activity in previous posts, but it’s so easy to do and can help children create such new and fantastic stories I just have to share it again.

All you need is three random pictures or props. For example; a lion, a castle and a queen or a key, a hat and a photo of a cat. The aim of this challenge is to write a story about these three items.

For instance;

* Write about a story where the king of a castle has been turned into a lion and his wife the queen has to find a way to turn him back again.

* Or a princess and her pet lion go on an adventure to defeat the evil queen and get her castle back.

* A little girl finds a magic key which she needs to return to the enchanted land of cats. With the use of her magic hat she is able to transport to different lands, hence she is able to complete her mission.

The story ideas are endless. Plus children will find that being able to see and feel the photos and props will help them to describe them better throughout their stories.

Reuse an Old Story

What If Snow White Didn’t Like Apples? What if Cinderella never lost her shoe?

Taking old well-known stories and giving them a bit of a shake up is so much fun to do. I’ve visited a number of schools, where we’ve had a go at doing this and it’s been so much fun. The children’s imaginations are fantastic; from Spiderman being bitten by a snake instead of a spider to beauty taking on the role of the beast.

This activity allows the children to not have to think about the setting and other characters too much. All they have to do is concentrate on the main character and how they react to these new situations.

If you like this idea check out my book; Ellie Rose and her Time Machine. The Princess in the Tower.
